My first of many shout-outs to my favourite toy line of all time... and quite possibly what inspired me - at least partially - to join the military.

Maybe even to draw comics as well, now that I think of it - thank you Larry Hama!

Heheheh... I use that line all the time. Gotta love '80s cartoon toys! :)

Actually, the G.I. Joe action figures date back to the early 1960s, when it was just G.I. Joe in field khakis or frogman wetsuit.

They even did a Space Operations Joe with a Mercury capsule at one point (never mind that, when accounting for scale, Joe's capsule had a lot more space in the cockpit than a real Mercury. The Mercury Seven used to jokingly call themselves "spam in a can," because the cockpit interior wasn't much larger than they were in their spacesuits). I think it wasn't until the '80s that the Joes got different names and characters.

I am aware of the origins of G.I. Joe, but thank you!

I was referring to the "knowing is half the battle" PSAs that the esteemed Mr. Blakeley is referencing here. Those were an integral (and arguably the most lasting) part of the 1980s cartoon.

I hope this isn't coming off as snarky. I do not intend that to be the tone. :)

Esteemed? My my... Not sure I deserve such an adjective, but I will admit I like the sound of it, especially coming from such esteemed company! :)

But yes, the good professor is correct. The "knowing is half the battle" line originates from the 1980s Sunbow cartoon, though I would argue that the most lasting and probably most important part of that era was the introduction of GI Joe's arch-enemy, the ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world: Cobra!
